River Dwelling is in the heart of the Aska Adventure Area along the scenic Toccoa River in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Opportunities for recreation and adventure are readily available, but if you are looking for a more relaxed activity, golfing, fishing, antique shops,
craft shops and restaurants are also nearby.
The Fannin County Chamber of Commerce has an extensive list of attractions and recreational activities in the County. Blue Ridge Business Association has tourist information and Blue Ridge GA has tourist information as well as live camera views of downtown Blue Ridge.
The Georgia Conservancy's Guide to the North Georgia Mountains calls the Toccoa River "Georgia's prettiest whitewater stream." With over eighteen miles of runable whitewater, the Toccoa offers something for the beginners and advanced paddlers. The 13.8 Mile Toccoa River Trail passes right by River Dwelling. Other paddling opportunities are available on nearby rivers as well, including the Cartecay, Conasauga, Chestatee, Etowah, and the Nantahala.
The Toccoa River flows north to the Tennessee border, where its name changes to the Ocoee River, home of the 1996 Olympic Whitewater Competition, famous for its whitewater rafting of class IV and V rapids.
Boating and Fishing
According to Georgia Outdoor News, the Toccoa River is one of the region's rivers that hold the characteristics required for anglers to find big trout.
In addition to the Toccoa River, dozens of other excellent fishing streams are available in the area. Fishing licenses are required and can be obtained from a variety of locations. Several fishing outfitters are available in the area for guided fishing trips and fly-fishing instruction.
Crystal clear Lake Blue Ridge has over 100 miles of shoreline and is one of Georgia's most picturesque mountain lakes. It offers swimming, boat rentals, boat ramps, jet skiing, fishing, and picnicking.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
In addition to the two long trails in Fannin County (the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail ) there are a number of shorter day hikes and overnighters that cover every skill level.
Experienced hikers may choose to explore the 35,000-acre Cohutta Wilderness Area, the largest protected wilderness east of the Mississippi River.
A number of waterfalls can be accessed from hiking trails in the area, including Long Creek Falls, Fall Branch Falls, Sea Creek Falls, and Jacks River Falls.
The Aska Trails Area is a 17-mile system of hiking and mountain biking trails with views of Lake Blue Ridge and the mountains. The area is blessed with riding stables, experienced guides and beautiful terrain, whether rolling hills or mountain trails.
Some stables offer hay rides, moonlight rides, overnight rides with camping, wilderness rides...there's something for everyone, even the most inexperienced rider. Several outfitters offer riding lessons and long and short-term boarding.
Whitepath Golf Course in nearby Ellijay; Butternut Creek Golf Course in nearby Blairsville; Nicklaus Golf Club at Birch River in Dahlonega (80 minutes) or the Brasstown Valley Resort course in Young Harris (40 minutes).
Town Of Blue Ridge
The town of Blue Ridge, Georgia offers a variety of shopping opportunities in the downtown historic district including antique and crafts shops. The historic Blue Ridge Scenic Railway departs from the depot in downtown Blue Ridge for 26-mile round trip train rides along the Toccoa River. Blue Ridge also offers a variety of restaurants, a movie theater, bowling, and Swan Drive-In, one of the four remaining drive-in theaters in Georgia. Mercier Apple Orchards near town is one of the largest apple orchards in the Southeast. Many festivals, plays, concerts and special events are held throughout the year in Blue Ridge and the surrounding area including the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival and The Blue Ridge Mountain Adventure Race.
